My grandfather was Virgil Wells, and he was the sheriff of Ben Hill county in the 1930s and 40s. My mother and her sisters grew up living in this jail. They lived on the lower floors and the cells were on the upper floor. I grew up in Ben Hill county and moved away in early sixties. My son showed me this web sight and I cant stop looking at it. Many of your photos are of places I remember from my childhood.
Glad you like the site, David…it’s my way of saving these places for memory. When I started these photographs, I couldn’t hardly find a single picture of any old places in South Georgia on the internet. Now we’re well-represented.
