My Grandfather, John Cornelius Butler, farmed on the Maddox place just outside Rebecca. He was murdered at the Double Creek Bridge on Dec. 4, 1940. He had been at the pool hall that night and had gotten into an agruement with Clay Marchman, who followed him and killed him. If anyone remebers this or has heard of it, I would love to talk with you. I am doing research for a book. Can’t wait to visit Rebecca. Haven’t been there since I was a kid.
I was raised in Rebecca and I knew the Cawthons…his mother use to give my Mama her vitamin shots….enjoy hearing comments about my home town.
I was given the task of riding my bike across the RR tracks and buy Navy Snuff for my neighbor Mert. We also lived there during the ice storm of 1964. My father was the Methodist preacher at the Methodist church in town. We use to pull the rope and to ring the church bell and compare our shoe sizes with Roy. We live next to Mr. Snow.
Thanks as always for your great reminiscences, Mark!
