Great photos!! I would like to introduce you to the tiny town of Jakin, GA. We still have the original bank building, now restored as City Hall, that was built around 1900 when Jakin was flourishing and the Mosely store, now closed, of about the same age which is kept up by a Mosely family member. We have a lovely little library that was built to look like the general store (and on the same site) of the original Nunnery store. It was decided to restore the original but had been throughly eaten by termites so a copy of the original store was built for the library. The library includes a room that displays Jakin’s history and also serves as a meeting room for the City Council. Where a row of abondoned brick stores that fell to the ground a couple of decades ago once stood, there is a beautiful park with a large gazebo and a stage for entertainment…both used for family reunions and get-togethers. At the turn of the 1900s there were nearly 2,500 people. Mostly these folks were involved in lumbering out the yellow pine in the many forests for the Flowers Lumber Company. There were many others, folks working in the various businesses here and, of course, the many farmers who knew the rich farmland in the area. There was a depot, trains still run almost daily through the South end of town though the depot and stationmaster’s home are gone. We have a firehouse with two fire engines , a station house and six very well trained volunteer firemen who have helped out with fires around Early County. At one point, not so many years ago, there were only about 80 people in the town but we are now over 100 (big growth for us!!) and, with the interest among some of our citizens, we feel we may attract more here and there. On one end of the county, about five minutes from the Jakin , is the beautiful Chattahoochee River. The Florida border is about 10 minutes away. I moved back her after 32 years in Atlanta and just love it. The rural feel, the beauty of nature and close proximity to the Florida beaches, if the oil spill doesn’t ruin them, and the lovely wildlife. make it a great spot to retire to. We are only about 25 miles (with very little traffic!) to the constantly growing town of Dothan, AL for shopping, etc. and five minutes to Donalsonville (pop. 2,500) for grocery shopping, etc. We love our “toy town” and think it’s a very special and beloved place.
Thanks so much for all the information and your nice comments, Olivia! I will definitely do my best to get to Jakin soon…Can’t wait to add it to my site!
