Evans Grocery, Fitzgerald, 1955

Evans Grocery was long a Fitzgerald retail institution, frequented by town and city folk alike, just outside the city limits on US Highway 319. Cleo and Lola Defore Evans were the proprietors. They bought and sold fresh local produce, butter and eggs, and the like. As this photograph well illustrates, they sold everything from fireworks to saltlicks, and of course, double-dip ice cream cones. They epitomized what we think of today when we think of the neighborhood grocery; I was fortunate to know them later in their lives, and thought highly of them. Many thanks to their son, Keith, for sharing this image.

At one time Cleo Evans was manager of the Suwanee Store on Pine Street and my father was manager of the Suwanne Store on Main street. These pictures bring back memories not to be forgotten.

  2. Wow, I was alive then! Great old picture.

I loved this picture – think it was seeing the people in there and all the “stuff.” Thanks for sharing all your photos. My family was from around McRae, Soperton and I love seeing all the old homes and abandoned places.

This photo is priceless. I went to college at Valdosta State. I often wonder why I ever left Georgia.
The picture appears to be from the early fifties, can you verify?
Also I couldn’t help but notice the cane poles leaning against the store. Brings back memories of fishing on the Oconee river around Soperton.
