This is the front porch of the beautifully restored circa-1850 Pearson Farmhouse, the residence of Janisse Ray and Raven Waters. Janisse is a well-known environmental activist and author. My family has known her since her first book was published and we’ve always supported her views on protecting and sustaining the fragile environment of our native South Georgia. (Ecology of a Cracker Childhood; Wild Card Quilt; Pinhook; Moody Swamp; Drifting into Darien; and the forthcoming The Seed Underground are among her works.) Raven oversees the operations of the farm and leads a variety of workshops on topics as diverse as home brewing and cheesemaking. I recently attended one of his beer-making classes and it was great fun! Raven also sells produce and handmade sodas at the Mainstreet Statesboro Farmers Market. Visit them at:

While returning from south Georgia a few years ago I took a detour through Baxley just to get a feel for the flatwoods that shaped Ray’s incredible sense of place. Thank you for sharing this.
Thanks for reblogging the posts, Cameron, and thanks for your insightful comments. Janisse is a good friend and such a wonderful advocate for the environment. So glad to know her, and Raven.
Do you know why it was called the “Pearson Farmhouse”? Was it named for the Pearson surname or a Pearson family? Thank you. Jenni jenicoe2001@yahoo.com
I believe the builder was a Pearson…
