Eclectic Cottage, Shawnee

Shawnee GA Effingham County Vernacular Architecture Old House Scrollwork Picket Fence Picture Image Photograph © Brian Brown Vanishing South Georgia USA 2013

With some elements of Craftsman architecture, as well as the eclectic scrollwork, this home was likely built in the early 1920s.

All your images are extraordinary and I really appreciate seeing them. There are some though, that pull me back for a precious second sometimes third look, and this is one of them. As a matter of fact, I have looked at it daily since it was posted. I try to imagine how much love, hurt, sadness, joy, and prayers those walls have heard. I know I fall short in trying to piece together some of those things,

Again, thank you so much for sharing. You have made this world a better place by documenting these wonderful places.

    Hi Brian,
Are the homes like this that you photograph, only used part of the year, or are they abandoned?
It seems like a young couple with some ambition and a bit of elbow grease….could turn these back into nice places to live.
I hate to see a house which has good possibilities….go to waste.

My grandparents lived in a home just like this in Banks County. It was always a great treat to visit them and see the house. Down the left was the “parlor”, dining room, and the kitchen. There was a hall that extended the length of the house and the bedrooms were down the right. This photograph has really stirred some great memories.
    Thanks for sharing.

Just imagine this adorable, welcoming home in it’s heyday. I would love to have lived here. I always say, “Tell me the story.”
