Kirkland House, Nicholls

Nicholls GA Coffee County Abandoned Razed Two Story Vernacular House Architecture Picture Image Photograph © Brian Brown Vanishing South Georgia USA 2013

This vernacular house, which I suspect may have been older than its appearance here would suggest, was torn down some time in 2012. I say it may have been older due to the presence of the asbestos siding. Susan McDaniel notes that it was the home of a Mrs. Kirkland who taught school in Alma, and was well-maintained while she lived here.

The KIrkland house was across the street from my granddaddy’s barber shop. Mr. Kirkland, known as “Geech”, was a retired engineer, I believe, with the state of GA. He was rather small-framed and always dressed immaculately with seersucker striped pants, white shirt and straw hat (in summertime). He wore wire-rim glasses and a big smile. :)

This house belonged to Mrs. Kirkland, who taught school in Alma. It was very, very old and in good shape when she lived there.
