Begun in 1871, Clay County’s vernacular courthouse is the oldest in the Pataula Judicial Circuit and one of the oldest in South Georgia.

Volunteers’ Memorial, Fort Gaines
Placed by the Fort Gaines Historical Society in 2010, the plaque on this boulder bears the inscription:

Wayside Inn, Fort Gaines
This served as a temporary Confederate hospital in1863. I would estimate its construction to the mid 1840s-1860 era.

Brown House, Circa 1830, Fort Gaines
This has served as a private residence and a hotel during its long history. The “doorway to nowhere” and porthole-like windows on the frieze are quite unusual.
