New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, Hickox
The image below shows the social hall. The tradition at most South Georgia churches has been dinner-on-the-grounds
for generations, but screened in pavilions like this one have become more popular as a safeguard against insects and the elements.

(CSA Iron Cross/Southern Cross of Honor)
E. B. Jones (CSA Iron Cross/Southern Cross of Honor)

Rebecca Jane Jones – 2 July 1851 – 26 March 1930
The Southern Cross of Honor has two distinct incarnations. They first honored men for specific deeds during the war, similar to a Bronze Star or Purple Heart. The present and more common version was conceived by Mary Ann Erwin at Atlanta in 1898. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and they saw this as a way to properly honor anyone who had given loyal service to the cause. They were first given as medals, and then as grave markers, and today, similar memorials are issued by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Indian Wars Veteran’s Headstone, New Hope Cemetery
Private Allen Highsmith
Walker’s Company, Indian Wars
16 January 1804 – 18 November 1870
General James Walker’s Company was active in the Indian Wars of the late 1830s. It’s quite rare to find these types of markers, but since this one is relatively new and government-issued, someone did research and ordered it from the Department of Defense.

World War I Bronze Star Headstone, New Hope Cemetery
In Honor of Private Alfred R. Griffin – 35th Company, 157th Depot Brigade
Died in Service Camp Gordan (sp.), Ga.
May 15, 1894 – Sept. 27, 1918
Camp Gordon is misspelled on this one. Also, I don’t know whether Private Griffin was an actual Bronze Star recipient or if this was just a form of patriotic memorial. At any rate it’s an interesting reminder of the sacrifices made by South Georgians in World War I.

Carpenter’s Headstone, New Hope Cemetery
Woodrow Register, Jr.
10 July 1969 – 16 December 2009
I find headstones related to someone’s trade to be interesting tributes.
