Evans Grocery was long a Fitzgerald retail institution, frequented by town and city folk alike, just outside the city limits on US Highway 319. Cleo and Lola Defore Evans were the proprietors. They bought and sold fresh local produce, butter and eggs, and the like. As this photograph well illustrates, they sold everything from fireworks to saltlicks, and of course, double-dip ice cream cones. They epitomized what we think of today when we think of the neighborhood grocery; I was fortunate to know them later in their lives, and thought highly of them.
