Egyptian Revival Mausoleum of John David Mongin

Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah

John D. Mongin (1756-14 November 1833)

This spectacular example of Egyptian Revival style is the final resting place of Mongin, who operated steamboats between Charleston and Savannah. Beneath the inscription atop the pyramid are the family names Mongin-Stoddard. I don’t know of the Stoddard connection. A tablet at the base of the pyramid lists these names dates, as well: Mrs. Sarah Mongin, 1816; David John Mongin, 1823; Mrs. Sarah Blodgett, 1833; Edmund W. Mongin, 1813; David J. Mongin, Jr., 1813; Jane J. Mongin, 1821; Sarah Mongin, 1822; Benjamin Blodgett, 1827; Joseph Blodgett, 1831; Sarah M. Blodgett, 1840.

Tybee Island Light Station, 1773>

Posted in --CHATHAM COUNTY GA--, Tybee Island GA with tags , , , , , , , on June 20, 2010 by Brian Brown

The lower sixty feet of this lighthouse date to John Mulryne’s construction of 1773, itself a replacement for two previous lighthouses (the first of which was built for James Oglethorpe,  in 1736). So strategic and important to the future growth of Georgia was the placement of a lighthouse at the confluence of the Atlantic Ocean and the Savannah River that General Oglethorpe threatened to hang the incompetent builder of the first beacon. Numerous modifications and additions have been made over the ensuing two centuries.

Identified by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the most threatened structures in the state in 2008, the tabby Adam-Strain building was used as a waterfront warehouse, survived looting by Union troops in 1863, was refurbished in 1870, and has most recently survived a demolition attempt by its present owner.
