This is the operator’s shed or watch tower, which allowed the worker to see steamboat traffic on the river, as well as oncoming trains. By the time the bridge was built steamboat traffic was already in decline.

The Mythical Town of Small Grove, Georgia
I’ve driven past this a hundred times, and stopped for the first time only today. It occupies nearly an entire side of a small rectangular concrete block structure and heralds the work of folk artist Henry Lee Gorham.
