Candy Massey Faircloth writes: Hatchers owned the store during the late 60’s early 70’s. Then T Faircloth took it over for 3-4 years. Then B. Faircloth took it over several years followed by the Crosbys for several years, then G Faircloth. Then S. Adams until it closed around ’07 . Once it was a bustling store here in the Greenough community. Customers could be seen purchasing feed, gas, snacks and beverages as well as lottery for a little while.

My classmate ,Gwendolyn Morey,’s father , McKinley was the owner of the Morey StoneStore, as far back as 1937, when we started school. I remember spending lots of nights at their house until we graduated in 1948. Later Mitchell County made a correction in the Greenough road rerouting Sylvester-Camilla Highway and Mr. Morey built that building on it so it would be easy to keep his customers happy and those traveling. After he died his wife and daughter ran them store until my classmate was robbed and killed. Her Mother was not able to continue to operate the store and the boys sold it. Thanks for sharing the information.

MY MOM AND I OFTEN DRIVE THROUGH THIS AREA SO THAT SHE CAN REMINISCE. SHE LOVES IT . I DON’T REMEMBER MUCH ABOUT IT BUT SHE TOO SAYS THAT IT WAS BLACK OWNED BACK IN THE DAY. SOME OF HER (OUR) RELATIVES STILL LIVE THERE: LILLIE WILLIAMS.

I used to buy yahoo’s and from cinnamon buns from Greenough Grocery as a kid in the 1970’s! You have to go to Camilla now for gas! I enjoyed growing up here.

Much of this area was black owned back in the day. To this day some of it stil is.
