All over Georgia you’ll find signs like this, usually near forestry stations. Their purpose is to show the level of fire danger in the area. It’s one of many incarnations of the enduring icon of the U. S. Forest Service.

I assume that this tower is located north of Denton and south of Roper, Georgia. Kids used to climb the many steps to the top of the tower and look across the green piney canopy that stretched to the distant horizon. I am sure that the Forest Service didn’t approve of our climbing, but they didn’t prohibit the occasional climb.
