Center Hill Schoolhouse Ruins, Colquitt County

Located near Hartsfield, the Center Hill community is all but forgotten today and can only be found on the most specific maps. It never had a post office, but likely a store, as well as this school, to serve the nearby farm families. Dora Bates writes: I believe these are the remains of the old three room school house at Center Hill which I attended from first thru fifth grades.

  1. My parents, James and Eloy Murphy, owned and operated a country store at Center Hill in the early 1940’s. My oldest sister, Linda, attended Bay Pole school (which came about after Center Hill School) in the first grade and her teacher was Mrs. Vickers. She remembers Mr. Clark (Mr. Joe Clark’s Father) coming often to the store,My Dad was such a good-hearted person and would let people charge their goods, and many did not pay, so he was forced to close the store and began farming.

I want to find out about this school house when I see you at the reunion.
