Bernice Doyle writes: This store was known as Miss Inez’ s Mercantile Store. My mother worked for her for many years. It is sad to see it is falling in. Climax looks nothing like it did when I was growing up there. Jean Ouzts writes: I am the Climax news paper correspondent for the Bainbridge Post Searchlight. Is this the store that has the big white square of the side that showed movies.I think that would be in the early 1950’s. My older brother and sister and I would go to Climax to spend time with our grandparents. Mk
I am the Climax news paper correspondent for the Bainbride Post Searchlight. In my research of the history of Climax, I found the store you have listed as Byrd’s is incorrect. The is the same store on Main Street and is the remains of Miss Inez Allen’s store. If you will examine the picture you have listed as Miss Allen’s store you will notice that this is the same with the covered side walk torn off. The indentation in the doorway and everything is the same. The streets are the same.
According to my research the store now named Ware’s and Son was the Byrd store. Of course it has been remodeled on the front, but the Byrd store was also a newer store than Miss Allen. Byrd’s store was located on Broad Street, and the store you have listed as such is on Main Street.
Kathy may remember going to Grover’s store, which later became, Gowan’s, and then B&B or Bishop and Betts. There were several other stores on Main Street before being torn down for the building of Parker Park. Jean Ouzts
Thank you for taking these pictures. This was Byrd’s Store when I was growing up and would come to Climax to visit my grandfather, he took us there to get a “sodie & crackers”. I can add this to my family tree memories. Do you have any others of Climax?
Thanks for sharing your memories, Kathy. I’ll change the title to reflect your information…Climax is such a great little town!
