James Price McRee (1862-1924) came to Mitchell County from Oconee County in 1889 and after a few years teaching at Camilla Academy, launched a successful naval stores enterprise. He commissioned prominent architect T. Firth Lockwood to build this home as a wedding present for his wife, Jeanette Wade, daughter of the sheriff of Brooks County. McRee and his business partner, Thomas I. McNeil, owned over 15,000 acres of timberland in the first decade of the 20th century and upon McNeil’s death in 1918, McRee bought out his share of the business. After a fire in 1936, the house was slightly remodeled by the Valdosta architect Lloyd Greer. The house remains the centerpiece of Camilla’s historic residential area.

Lovely photographs–I was amazed at the number on your web page, but most surprised to see McRee Hall. I fell in love with this house on another website and copied the photo from there to use as a desktop background. I thought I recognized it when I saw your photo and confirmed it. I had no idea, at that time, that I had a family connection to the house–Jeannette Wade is a distant cousin. I hope you continue your work–too much is lost, already.

“Daughters of the American Revolution” and “The First Families of TN”.

I’ve been diligently doing genealogy research on all lines of my family for 10-15 years and this photo adds greatly to the information in my Wade side of the Family Tree program.

WoW…Impressive…Nice to see it’s cared for and now a B&B. A pharmacy fits the Wade history, as several generations of Wade’s were doctors.

My wife and I stayed at this B&B last month. The ground floor was undergoing renovations as the owner was planning to open a compounding pharmacy on that floor. There are four bedrooms on the second floor furnished with period pieces.
