This type of farmhouse, sometimes called Georgia Cracker, was once widespread throughout the region. It’s becoming quite rare today.

  1. My grandmother was born in a farmhouse in Deepstep Washington County Georgia in 1898…This picture makes me wonder if this is it….If this isn’t the house then she was born in one very much like it…There is such beauty in these old houses…

    Cracker, or vernacular, is the most noble of architectural languages. Is is style free, organic, and responsive to function, climate, conservation of materials…a great lesson for our own times of over opulence in the face of a world that is loosing resources.
