Suwannee River at Fargo

The Suwannee River is one of America’s best-known waterways, thanks to Stephen Foster’s immortal song, Old Folks at Home (Swanee River). The song’s romanticizing of plantation days and “happy darkies” is now rightfully criticized, but somehow it endures.

Heavy rains this winter have forced the river over its banks.

The high waters are evident at the Suwannee River Visitors Center, a state-run facility that’s presently closed.

The river’s source is the nearby Okefenokee Swamp.

Bethel Primitive Baptist is located outside Fargo. (established 1842). My Revolutionary War ancestor, John Lee, is buried there along with 4 of his family members. I have photos of the church and cemetery.
