Main Street Storefronts, Damascus

Most of these storefronts are in ruins and will soon be gone. The building on the far right was Brady’s Food Basket, the local grocery store.

  1. Was a citizen of Damascus GA until my chicken had to go

It don’t look anything like that now all run down and the two city workers ride around all the time on the lawnmowers and won’t cut the grass never have I seen where they had two or more workers and still don’t do any work for years they only had one city worker that keep the grass cut trash clean up but the only thing that the two do now is ride up and down the road and invite there family and friends to ride 4 Wheeler and throw trash out everywhere and have party’s but then the mayor said he cleaning up the town for the kids and families if you ask me that’s a lot of crap..

I was a young girl but vaguely remember the “junk furniture” store at the end of the block that was identified as This and That Shop. I think the middle of the block would have been Dowdy’s Rio Grocery store. I never lived in Damascus but my Grandmother, Mary Lou Phillips, worked at the meat counter in the back of Dowdy’s.

In the 60’s, and the section of the building on the far right in the picture was the home of the This and That shop. Spent many happy afternoons there plundering through the goods for sale – still have a step-stool that cost me 50 cents.
