Abandoned Bank, Montezuma

This bank has been closed for many years, but is presently being restored for use as a community center. I believe it was originally the Bank of Macon County and was later purchased by Wachovia. It was likely built in the 1970s.

  1. Before this building was built, there were several business establishments there. There was a beauty salon on the corner, a clothing store, hotel with a coffee shop, and gas station. It was torn down and sold to the bank. A new bank building was erected in the 1970’s by the Bank of Macon County. It was bought by Wachovia then Wells Fargo. My father was on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Macon County and Wachovia. After it closed, nothing was in the building for many years.

I thought this used to be Citizens Georgian. I’ll have to ask my mom. It was such a beautiful building. So glad it is being repurposed. Thanks for sharing!

This building was built much later. Maybe in the 70’s. I worked there in the early 80’s and it was fairly new then. I believe there was a hotel on this site back in the 40’s. There was also a gas station on the corner that was torn down to make the parking area.

Thanks Brian. Do you know anything about the social or architectural history of this building? It appears to me that it might be a better than average effort from the 40’s or 50’s to design a building specifically for use as a bank but also intended to look “old” and “historic”. I may be wrong. Either way It is a well done.

    • I don’t know, Ben, but comments from locals suggest it is 20th-century. Like you, I’m guessing just after WWII. I believe it first housed the Bank of Macon County and was then purchased by Wachovia. It may have closed after the ’94 flood. I know it hasn’t been a bank for at least 15 or 20 years.

      • Thank you for the encouragement. I’m quite slower in this summer heat. I think this year has been the worst yet.
