The central portion of this house, thought to date to around 1850, was originally located in the nearby town of Oglethorpe. A terrible epidemic there in 1862 left as many as 100 dwellings uninhabited and the house was purchased by Colonel Charles J. Malone and moved to Americus. Captain John A. Cobb, a Georgia legislator, bought it in 1883 and it remained in his family for well over a century.

History of a place is so welcome and interesting.
Thanks Brian. Beautiful house! I love Americus…especially the Windsor Hotel. Another architect and I visited to look at the Windsor before it was restored and the local resident and history lover who showed us around took us to the neighborhood where many houses were moved from Oglethrope during that epidemic. He made a excellent point that we had never considered… before the era of utility connections, overhead power lines and busy highways with hundreds of signs close to the road, it was much less difficult to move buildings, at least from planning for the avoidance of obstructions. It was much more common event before the turn of the 20th century.
My cousin, John Popwell, and his wife Trish, did a beautiful restoration of this house about 10 years ago.
