The decline in dairy farming was only one reason barns were less often built after the 1930s. Mules, declined in suse dramatically . The required shelter as did their leather harness and feed. I recall that some of the older farmers still kept mules after they bought a tractor, and had obvious affection for their long-lived mules, each one seemingly having a unique personality.
