Quality Signs, Jesup

As part of a renovation project on commercial storefronts in downtown Jesup, this sign painter’s storefront has been exposed. The typography would suggest the business likely dated to the 1950s or maybe the 1960s, but not the building itself. It’s likely much older. I just like the old sign and the design era it represents.

BJ’s Bar-B-Que, Jesup

As with most good barbeque spots, BJ’s Original Hog Wild Bar-B-Que in Jesup is a bit ragged around the edges, but don’t let the looks fool you.

For nearly 30 years, BJ’s has been doing barbeque right in Jesup. Pulled (they call it chopped) pork with a tangy mustard sauce is the highlight of their menu for me. I personally hate sweet sauce on meat. Their baked beans, which I recommend, are a bit sweet but full of pieces of pork. Brisket, chicken, and Brunswick stew are also available. The only thing I don’t care for here is the slaw, which is just too sweet. But the pork is so tender and the sauce so good, the slaw isn’t that big of a deal for me.

Mary Ann Motel, Jesup

This is one of a few survivors of numerous motels located in and near Jesup on US 301, mostly from the 1940s-1960s. I believe it was last used as apartments. The two story building was likely an office/residence and may have had a restaurant, as well.

Queen Anne House, Jesup

According to neighbors this once served as boarding house, though it has primarily been used as a private residence.

Folk Victorian House, Jesup

This eclectic Folk Victorian looks like a stereotypical “haunted house”; apparently, it has been in a state of disrepair for quite a few years. Hopefully, someone will buy it and restore it one day. It’s among the older houses in Jesup.

Vernacular Bungalow, Jesup

A nice variety of vernacular and formal styles can be found in Jesup’s historic residential area. It would be nice to see better documentation and a National Register of Historic Places designation for this area. I’m really surprised that no such effort has been made to date.
