Ann Chamlee made this photograph in 1989. A newer structure stands on this site, near the Powersville community, and this historic African-American church is presumed to be long gone. Like Jordan Chapel A. M. E. in Haddock, Lizzie Chapel was likely used by the community for various purposes.

Tenant Farmhouses, Peach County
Raymond Clark writes: These were the homes where people lived who picked peaches for the Mike Pearson family. I used to work for the Pearsons in the 1980s when I was a teen. African-Americans used to work in the peach field and peach package house before Mexicans took over. The houses were abandoned after Mike Pearson left the peach business and began working for Blue Bird. The Lane family took over peach business.

H. V. Kell Building, 1912, Fort Valley
H. V. Kell was a a grocery-hardware store chain. The stenciled advertising placed diagonally between the windows was very common in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, but is rarely seen intact today. The banners read, from left to right: Farm Hardware; Field Fence; Roofing Nails; Paints And Oil.
Fort Valley was a real surprise, as I’d only passed through the area briefly before my recent photo expedition there. There are three National Register Historic Districts in the town and one of the most interesting and well maintained downtowns I’ve seen in awhile. It’s a bit out of the way, but definitely worth a trip whether you’re a photographer, historian, or casual visitor.
